OK ladies, now let’s get in formation.
I have this month’s music roundup and just let me tell you... it’s fire. Anyone who knows me well, knows that I go bananas over new music. I’ll play a song until everyone is begging me to find something new. May has been no exception. There have been SO many new singles and I’m in euphoria.
Katy Perry is back at it and her two latest hits are just that... HITS. While I’m not a fan of Katy Perry the person, I’m a fan of KP the artist. Selena Gomez has a new song and I can promise that you’ve never heard anything like it. The boys of One Direction are finally coming out with their solo music and it’s interesting! Personally, it’s cool to finally see into their individual personalities a little more. You can tell what genre of music inspires them and who they want to establish themselves as they try to shed the boy band aesthetic. I hope you check out a few (or all) of these songs and find a few that become a staple in your summer playlist.
Be sure to let me know if you like any of them!
xx, Stay Basic

Bad Liar: Selena Gomez
Selena is going in a whole different direction with “Bad Liar”. It’s something that I’ve certainly never heard from her and to my surprise, it’s got a very mysterious vibe to it. It’s very sultry and kind of coffee-house, slam poetry, new artist night. Like it’s weird but I think I like it! Go check it out & decide for yourself.
Swish Swish: Katy Perry
I’m dead. This song is the funniest thing EVER... just go and read the lyrics. The beat is fire and Nicki Minaj is a joy to listen to, as usual. It’s another one of those “I’m the baddest bitch” anthems but I don’t mind at all. Get ready to hear this song all summer.
Slow Hands: Niall Horan
Ooooh Niall you’ve got my heart. You can take me back to your place any time you’d like. Slow Hands is THE most sultry song of the month with it’s R/B vibe and light guitar sounds in the background. Very reminiscent of Zayn or Miguel. Definitely a welcome surprise from the 1D alum. I’ll just be here, patiently waiting for more music!
Sweet Creature: Harry Styles
Styles’ voice is so magical that I don’t think I’d really care what he sings, but Sweet Creature is the most beautiful love ballad that I’ve heard in a while. It’s so since sounding and the soft beat combined with the backup voices just make me want to die. Like I can die in peace now that I’ve heard this song. It’s a nice calm song for doing homework, relaxing or falling asleep.
Want You Back: HAIM
Hooray for more HAIM! Their comeback single is a slow ballad and if you listen intently to the lyrics it really makes the song that much better. I’m such an emotional piece of shit so it was 100% guaranteed that I was going to like this song. It has a bouncy vibe and it the perfect sunroof open, sunny car ride song.
Barricade: Janelle Kroll
I stumbled upon this gem the other day and was instantly hooked. It has a really cool rhythm and Kroll’s voice is a nice change from mainstream artists. This song is a mood booster and ideal for getting ready in the morning or trying to get motivated.
Strip That Down: Liam Payne
Wow! Definitely not the sound that I expected from LP. Strip That Down has a very obvious hip-hop presence and it has more of a club vibe than anything. The song also features Quavo for a few “oh yeahs”. It has a fun beat and if you don’t listen to the lyrics too closely, you’ll really enjoy the song!
Bon Appétit (MUNA remix): Katy Perry
This version of the song is a certainly more palatable than the original. It has an airy vibe about it (very reminiscent of M83) and Perry’s voice is a barely audible underneath the remixed sound. This definitely has the potential to be a staple in the following months!
I’m The One: DJ Khalid
Uh, if you don’t like this song, I’m sorry but we can’t be friends. This is the most LIT song of the month. It features Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance the Rapper and Lil Wayne... like what else could you ask for? The beat is SO catch and Justin’s voice is just mesmerizing as usual. Have fun trying to not play this song 24/7!
Birds and the Bees: DWilly, Kyle Thornton
One of the best beats I’ve heard in a while! All I want to do is dance when this song comes on. It gives off such a feel good, long hot shower vibe. Like this is the type of song you listen to to get you hype for the day. A must listen!
Attention: Charlie Puth
Yesss Charilie Puth... Just yes. This song won’t be a favorite to some but got damn I just want to break it down every time it comes on. It feels like everyone is trying to do the whole sultry, R&B thing these days and Charlie just jumped right on board. This song definitely sounds very similar to Nick Jonas or someone along those lines, so if you like him, you’re guaranteed to like this. Attention is so catchy & is highly likely to be your favorite summer song.
Meet Me in the Hallway: Harry Styles
Harry you’ve done it again! I can’t seem to get enough of his soulful, seductive voice. I would have never pegged myself for a Harry Styles fan but damn he’s roped me in. This song is similar to Sweet Creature but it’s a little grittier and may or may not have some type of banjo in the background (LOL I can’t decide).
LOVE: Kendrick Lamar
Just DREAMY. Ugh this song is the epitome of just the most relaxing day ever. It’s that go-to song for when you want to get into your feels & just reflect. Super reminiscent of Drake or Jeremih.
Drunk Girls Don’t Cry: Maren Morris
I’m not usually a listener of country music, but Maren Morris has my heart. Her music is so easy to listen to and just so far from your typical country artists. She has a way of blending different genres into one completely new sound and I dig it. This song is the best to sing along to and is sure to lighten your mood.
The Cure: Lady Gaga
Gaga has slayed me once again. This is one of the few songs of hers that I think most people were able to listen to and not completely hate. The beat is on point and somehow has the power to make you drop everything and dance. I’ll be looking forward to more Gaga music that has the same vibe as this bc I can’t get enough.
Candy Paint: Post Malone
Post is at it again with the most catchy music of all time. I don’t know how he does it. It has such a chill vibe (unsurprisingly) and it’s just one of the best sounding songs of the month. BTW, be sure to listen out for the “Office” reference!
Don’t Get Much Better Than This: Jeremih
Another track off the Fast and Furious soundtrack, Jeremih makes another hit single with this song! His voice is so soothing and sexy, how could you not like this song? It’s a more upbeat than some of his other music and it’s the perfect getting ready song.
